JFK Building 111, Queens, NY, 2024 | Role: Design Assist, Fabrication
We fabricated this series of cylindrical concrete pedestals for The People’s Creative Institute as part of an installation designed by Micropolitan Studio. The pedestals were designed to hold 12 sculptures by Milton Hebald, which were originally bronze models for the 12-piece "Zodiac Screen," a series of sculptures that were hung on the Pan-American Airlines Terminal at John F. Kennedy International Airport in 1961. Reinstalled in the lobby of the former Pan Am office building, a mid-century modern cruciform complex, the sculptures will be on view to JFK employees and the public passing by on the AirTrain.
The pedestals are each 18” inches in diameter, with heights that vary between 2’-10” and 4’-4” high, and weigh between 250-450 lbs each. They contain a concealed steel sleeve to support the sculptures and a painted, 3mm steel plate top, and use an EPS foam core to reduce weight. Despite this innovative construction that reduced the thickness of the concrete to just 2 1/2”, over two tons of concrete was required to create the pedestals.
