Wonderspaces San Diego

San Diego, 2017, 2018, 2019 | Role: Exhibition Design

Wonderspaces takes experiential art on the road to engage new audiences and connect people. They partner with artists from around the world to exhibit their work for limited runs in an expanding network of cities.

Afoam has designed exhibitions in a 20,000 square-foot tent as well as a 30,000 square-foot warehouse for two summers of three-month long installations, and is now participating in site selection for a variety of locations across the US. that will become locations for future venues and shows.

2017

San Diego Mission Valley

Wonderspaces started with a show in San Diego’s growing Mission Valley neighborhood in 2017. This initial iteration of the show took place in a prefabricated 20,000 square-foot tent.

We organized the artist installations into two “islands” that organized visitor flows and defined a social space for a bar at the center of the venue.

2018

San Diego B Street Pier

The 2018 edition was held in the Port of San Diego’s B-street Pier, which serves as a cruise terminal during the winter months. This 30,000 square-foot venue’s long-span structure and high ceiling heights allowed for a layout that arrayed individual installations at the perimeter of the space, and punctuated the remaining common space with individual artworks.
